7:19 am
good morning, everyone. welcome to centro. november is lung cancer awareness month, and did you know that it is estimated that more than 71,000 american women will lose their lives to lung cancer in 2015 alone. also, only 25% of hispanic women are aware that lung cancer kills more people than breast cancer, colon cancer, and pancreatic cancer combined.
7:20 am
important topic with us this morning via satellite are oncologist dr. jorge gomez and lung cancer survivor nancy. good morning. welcome both of you to centro. >> good morning. thanks for having us. >> doctor, why toent we start with you. tell us a little bit more. i think this is very shock, doctor, the fact that lung cancer killed a lot more women than all of the other forms of cancer combined. >> right. those are very important numbers, and one of the important things about them is that not everybody knows them so we were talking about the lung health barometer done by the american lung association through their lung force initiative, which showed that only 1% of women really have lung cancer on their radar as one of the big health issues, in spite of the fact that it is the no. 1 lung killer -- cancer killer in the world -- or in the united states. >> wow!
7:21 am
the fact that according to the statistics you gave us, lung cancer diagnosis in women are actually women who have never smoked or have stopped smoking. that's the case? >> well, the number of people who have never smoked approximately 10%. two-thirds includes women who have never smoked and women who have -- who are former smokers but have stopped smoking. >> okay. so, nan di, why don't we go ahead and talk to you. talk to us about your taste. congratulations. you've survived lung cancer. it is so important that you're talking to other women out there about this important topic. what can you till us? lung cancer? >> well, in 2009, i went to the hospital. feeling good. for a few years prior, i was coughing. i ended up coughing up blood, and that was a flag. so i went to the doctor. they did different tests, and i
7:22 am
was diagnosed with lung cancer. i never smoked in my life. i was only 39 years old, and -- >> wow! >> yeah. but i'm here. >> wow sfwlchlt you're here. thank fwod. what can you till us, nancy, when you first found out, what came to your mind? >> the first thing that came to mind was there's no way, but especially because of this stigma. a lot of people have associated lung cancer, like i said, with tobacco, with smoking, and i never smoked, like i said. so for me, it was unbelievable. there was no way that i was gonna have this disease without even smoking in my life, like a lot of people think, but i went to the lungforce. org, and they helped me a lot. i learned a lot. especially that if you have lungs, you are able to get lung cancer, and that was one of the things that surprised me the most. they helped me a lot. took me to the point that i
7:23 am
speak to my family or my friends, letting them know that it was actually lung cancer, tell them that it was cancer but not lung cancer. so because of that stigma alone, it really make me feel alone. the lungforce.ovshgsrg, they helped me, and i don't feel alone anymore. >> that's really good. why is now the perfect time to talk about lung cancer, doctor? obviously it's november, but you think we should be talking about it not just during nont of november. >> well, i agree. i think that every moment is a moment to talk about lung cancer. the incidence of lung cancer continues to increase every year, but we have to take advantage of these opportunities such as november, the lung cancer awareness month. >> and, nancy, your message to women out there who are watching this, about this whole experience, what is your message to women in general? >> my message is simple. don't wait. you know your body. if you see or feel anything different, go straight to your

doctor, talk to them, ask questions, do as i did, go to lungforce.org. you are able to find so much information there that is so helpful. it will be able to help you, how to talk to your family, talk to your friends. don't be scared in the sense that you are going to die. i'm a survivor. i'm a clear live example that you could beat this. >> that's so good. thank you so much, nancy, for telling us about your experience. doctor, nancy's message to women is don't wait. what are some of the symptom that is if women are feeling, they should go see their doctor? >> most important symptoms are respiratory, so cough, difficulty breathing, coughing up blood and often unexplained weight loss. those are the most important things to look at. very important to talk to your doctor not only when you have symptoms but also before then to cancer. >> all right. doctor, nancy, thank you so much both of you. this is very valuable information for our viewers. thank you. >> thank you very much.
7:25 am
>> now, for more information on lung cancer, you can visit lung jns force.org. you can also get a direct link to their web site visiting us online, and we'd like to invite you to connect with us online. that will do it for this edition of centro. i'm inviting you to step forward to a better you. see you next time. all right. 7:56. this is everybody here's favorite story of the morning. it's unbelievable. a fearless goat destined to be lunch show add siberian tiger who's boss. take a look. this fwoet was sent into the enclosure like many before him nasing a praetty bad fate, but unlike the others, he stood his ground, flashing his horns and fighting back and saying, huh-uh, i'm not going to be lunch, and then something unexpected happened. the tiger actually surrendered,
